Cannabis Tinctures: How To Guide

With the Holidays fast approaching, we thought it was pertinent to revisit our Cannabis Tinctures.  We absolutely love making them, they hit many points to make them a favorite of ours.

  • Easy to make
  • Versatility
  • Long Shelf Life
  • Low Calorie *Around 8 Calories per ML

Adding a few ML (milliliters) of these to Eggnog, Coffee, Ice Tea makes that beverage that much better.  Incorporating these into our holiday recipes makes it really easy to elevate many different recipes.

So What Are Cannabis Tinctures?

Alcohol based extracts is what they are.  Essentially we will use high proof alcohol (190 proof) to extract the goodies from our cannabis and the alcohol will become infused.  This is a time tested and proven method.  In addition, it makes dosing easy.  We will explore in future the posts making a vegetable glycerin tincture, which can be used in similar fashions to an alcohol tincture, but also allows us to make things like gummy bears and other various yummy edibles.

Why Use Cannabis Tinctures?

They are delicious that’s why.  Some people, like myself love the flavor.  However, that’s besides the point.  Cannabis Tinctures allow easy use and dosing of Marijuana.

  • Add it to coffee, iced tea, even a bottle water and consume.
  • Dosing is simple, try your newly made tincture in 1ML doses to understand how potent it is and how it effects you.
  • Discreet, no overwhelming smell when consuming
  • Healthy – coming in at around 8 calories per ML, plus you are not smoking it and you have full control over what you consume it in, unlike Marijuana Butter or Oil, this is nicer for the health conscientious enthusiast.

Ok, Ok, Lets Make Some Cannabis Tincture Already!

Yeh, enough of the blah blah blah fluff right? Lets get down to brass tax, how do we make this magical stuff.

So, we have a few options and it all depends on how much time you have and how potent you want it to be (at least this is my opinion).

Lets start with the long and becomes quite potent method.

30 Day Room Temperature Brew Method

So we will need some supplies.

  • High Proof Alcohol, I recommend EverClear 151->190 proof, you can get your hands on anything in that range.
  • Measuring Cup
  • Marijuana Flower – Depends how much tincture you want to make, but I usually use a quarter (7 grams) and end up with about 4.5 oz of tincture.
  • Cheese cloth (you will need this at day 30 for straining, I suppose you could use a coffee filter, but that’s not optimal.)
  • Mason Jar (8oz size is perfect)

Now Lets Make Some Tincture!

  1. Decarb your flower, absolutely a must.  Check out our post on decarbing here.  But the gist is this:
    *****Decarbing Instructions*****

    1. Preheat your oven to 240° F. / 115° C.
    2. Break up the marijuana by hand and spread evenly in one layer on a rimmed baking sheet.
    3. Bake for 30-40 minutes, carefully mixing every 10 minutes to ensure the marijuana is evenly toasted.
    4. Remove the marijuana when it has become a light to medium brown and is dried out. Wait for it to cool. It should crumble quite easily.

****Back To Our Tinctures****

  1. Now grind up your decarbed flower to a fine grind.
  2. Place flower into the mason jar.
  3. Measure out 4.5 ounces of EverClear (Or other high proof alcohol). And pour into Mason Jar and seal with cap.
  4. Shake for 1 minute.  Place in a cool dark cupboard for 1 month, shaking for a minute once daily.
  5. After 30 days, strain out via cheesecloth and funnel into eye dropper bottles.
  6. Enjoy! Remember 1ML at a time, until you are comfortable with your dosing.

  7. Turn on stove with pot on burner to medium high.
  8. Keep an eye on the temperature of the alcohol and marijuana mixture – we are aiming to hold 170 degrees F.
  9. Let simmer for 20 minutes at 170 F.
  10. After 20 minutes, with your mitts, carefully move the jar and let it cool on the counter.
  11. After it has cooled, strain your mixture with Cheese Cloth.
  12. Enjoy! Remember 1ML at a time, until you are comfortable with your dosing.

So, Why Not Choose Just 1 Way To Make Cannabis Tincture?

Sometimes you run out and need to make some quickly.  I am not a fan of the fast method, I do not find it to be a potent.  The fast method still works but it is like drinking a light beer vs a craft beer.  Takes more to get the desired effects, in my opinion.

As I have said before, I enjoy the flavor you get consuming cannabis tinctures, I usually just add it to bottled water.  The fast method doesn’t prove to be as flavorful as well.

If you have the time, I highly recommend doing the 30 day method, allowing the natural extraction process to happen.  Like anything in life, with patience you get the best results and will be rewarded.

Enjoy and be safe my friends
